MACHANEH YISRAEL

The second neighborhood built outside the walls lay about 1/2 a mile down the road from Mishkenot Shannanim. It was built for the North African, Jewish community - the Maaravim or Westerners. Rabbi David ben Shimon, from Rabat, Morocco, having settled in Jerusalem, bought the land for Machaneh Yisrael in 1866. It seems that the neighborhood never grew beyond 30 households by 1897. In time, the houses of Machaneh Yisrael were swallowed up by newer construction all around. Even the name of the neighborhood has been forgotten! Unlike Mishkenot Shannanim, Machaneh Yisrael was a private initiative on the part of Jerusalemites themselves who built and expanded their homes beyond the walls, at their own expense and with their own hands!
