2nd Temple Column

THE BURNT HOUSE

Here remains of the basement of an individual home destroyed by the Romans is on display. In the fire that destroyed the city, a wall collapsed, preserving the contents until the archaeologist's shovel uncovered it, almost 2,000 years later. Remains of the fire are evident everywhere. The impression is that this basement was used as a sort of industry center. Evidence of dyeing, and/or incense use were found. Stone vessels like those of the Herodian quarter, as well as weights, coins, and perhaps most remarkable, bones of an outstretched arm, seemingly reaching for a spear just beyond reach to ward off an attacker.
