  THE
CARDO
Much of the Byzantine Cardo is exposed today in the Jewish Quarter, below
ground level. This was a large colonnaded street bisecting the city from the Southern city
wall to the Northern one. It was a marketplace. Remains of the stalls along the Eastern
arcade of the cardo are visible. Josephus describes an Upper market located in the upper
city, as well as a lower market, running parallel to the Western Wall of the Temple mount
much of the way, also bisecting the City from South to North. The markets met at the area
known as Damascaus Gate. Remains of shops from Josephus' Second temple period market place
are similarly visible. The word Cardo either comes from the Greek word for heart or the
Latin word for Axis.
