TIFERET YISRAEL

This synagogue was also called the Nissan Bak shul, after a dedicated community worker who undertook the project. Construction for this, the "Glory of Israel" synagogue, began in 1862, but due to a shortage of funds, the building lacked a dome for several years. A donation of 1,000 Austrian thalers by none other than Emperor Franz Josef provided the funds to finish the dome and decorate the interior by 1872. The synagogue was named in honor of the saintly Rabbi Yisrael of Rozin. The first floor was rented out as living quarters, while the second floor housed the synagogue. This synagogue was destroyed by the Jordanians during the attack on the Jewish quarter in the 1948 War of Independence. It remains a ruin, to this day!
