THE WESTERN WALL TUNNELS

The "tunnels" are a mix of man made tunnels and interconnecting rooms and chambers; cisterns and support arches that expose the entire length of the Western wall below present day street level. One can walk from an area inside and to the left of the exposed public prayer plaza area all the way to end of the Western Wall and alongside the Antonia fortress erected by King Herod at the Northwest corner of the Temple Mount. Along the way, the largest 2 stones used in the construction are visible. A megalith, as it's referred to, measuring 41.5 feet and weighing over 400 tons was apparently used to counter balance the outward pressure forced down and out from the weight of the Temple mount plaza above.
